While some people prefer home care services or assisted living for their seniors, others prefer taking care of them at home. Although taking care of the elderly is a blessing, it’s one of the most challenging tasks. However, for every supportive role that you play, you need to understand that you can’t give what you don’t have. For instance, if you are exhausted, burned out or sick you will not be able to give your parent the kind of care that they need. It’s therefore important to take care of your own well being while caring for the elderly. Here are some of the ways of maintaining your own well being while caring for seniors.


Here are a few ideas to help you do just that:

1. Embrace proper self-care

As a caregiver, you must get proper exercise, nutrition, and sleep. In addition to this, you must also practice stress relief techniques and participate in social activities. When it comes to taking care of the needs of the loved one then proper care is not optional. If you don’t take care of your health, you might experience serious health decline to the extent that there is no one to take care of you.

2. Create a happiness list and practice

When you become involved in the well being of other people, you might easily forget about your own joy. You, therefore, need to create a happiness list of 20 items. Identify the things that are free and the ones that cost money. Even if they cost money, give yourself permission to indulge in some of these things. Remember, you work hard hence you need to take care of your happiness as well. Whether it’s a walk in the park or an occasional manicure, Doing this will greatly boost your well being.

3. Learn as much as you can

As a caregiver, you need to understand what to expect. You need to know the kind of challenges that your loved one is experiencing physically, cognitively or emotionally. This way, you can be ready for what you are likely to meet in the coming weeks or months. This is especially true when your elderly are suffering from a condition such as Alzheimer’s.

4. Practice guided meditation

Incorporating meditation into your daily routine can greatly improve your outlook on life and your state of mind. Apart from reducing stress guided meditation can boost your happiness, improve your concentration, and positively impact your immune system. While it may be difficult to get your mind calm taking few minutes off can significantly motivate you to continue the journey.

5. Don’t take anything personally and ask for guidance

Although this might be difficult to avoid, it’s very important to remain detached from any harmful or unreasonable behavior that your senior displays towards you. Remember, they might feel as if they’ve lost both their autonomy and authority. Hurtful actions or words are usually a result of the frustrations or fears that they associate with these. They are not basically directed at you.

There are several ways to take care of your own wellness while taking care of your elderly. Apart from these, find what works best for you and make an effort to practice them well. By doing this, you will significantly boost your ability to take care of them.
